Name: Katie Orris
Age: 29
Occupation: CPA - Audit Manager at CLA
What brought you to Baltimore Built? I was looking for more group based workouts and direct training since I am very new to weightlifting. I looked for gyms close to me, and I was so encouraged by the reviews and website and decided to give it a try.
How long have you been a member at Baltimore Built? About a month and half!
Were you athletic or involved in sports when growing up? If so, what sports and or activities did you participate in? Growing up I was involved in a variety of sports from childhood through high school but was more dedicated to dance (since age of 3) and was on a competitive dance team for five years. In college I joined the rugby team and played for five years and also played when I studied abroad in Ireland.
Were you working out regularly prior to joining Baltimore Built? If so, what were you doing? I wasn’t consistent, but I have a peloton bike and treadmill and still incorporate those workouts while at Baltimore Built.
Why do you workout? I do it mainly for my mental health and as an escape from any stress going on. I also am making my physical health a priority and this is a fun way to do it!
What is your favorite lift or movement and why? I love back squats because I feel strong while doing them! And since I am new, this is the one movement I am familiar with. I am really starting to like power cleans as well.
What is your favorite workout or type of workout and why? Strength training is my favorite because I love seeing the progress in this short time and feeling my body get stronger. I also love the feeling after completing the set and seeing what I accomplished. It also allows me to push past my limits.
What have you accomplished as an athlete (big or small) during your time at Baltimore Built? In the small amount of time I feel like I accomplished a lot. One is how much my conditioning has improved. When I first started, I could barely do ten jump rows in a row. I just got 46 in a row last week. Also just finishing some of the workouts is an accomplishment in itself for me.
What fitness goals do you have for the next year? I have a few! (1) I want to be able to do a one minute dead hang. (2) I want to grow to not hate burpees. (3) Run a mile without a break (4) Stay consistent and grow my technique.
How has your fitness influenced and/or impacted your life outside of the gym? Outside of the gym, I feel like the gym has provided more structure to my day and is allowing me to build healthy habits. I am also a happier person and also down 12 pounds since joining!
What hobbies and activities do you enjoy outside of the gym? I enjoy doing volo leagues with my friends. Throughout the year we do kickball, volleyball, and flag football. I also enjoy traveling with friends and family, either a long vacation or a weekend trip. I’ve been to 15 countries so far.
