November 2022 Athlete Of The Month

Name: Kayla Yi

Age:  33

Occupation:   Massage Therapist

How long have you been a member at BBS&C? I’m not sure!  About 3 years?

Were you athletic or involved in sports when growing up? I was an equestrian growing up from about age 6.  I rode and showed locally until college. Farm girl strong!

Were you working out regularly prior to joining BBS&C? If so, what were you doing? I’ve been CrossFitting for 10+ years.  I got my L1 in 2013 and my L2 in 2018.

Why do you workout? I love feeling strong.  The gym is the one place I can go to get away from all my stress and really focus on me for an hour. It’s where I go to feel empowered.

What is your favorite lift or movement and why? Hmm… probably cleans.  They require skill and power and make me feel unstoppable.

What is your favorite workout or type of workout and why? I love all the strength work!  Picking heavy things up and putting them down is the best confidence booster.

What have you accomplished as an athlete (big or small) during your time at BBS&C? My time at BBS&C has taught me the importance of nutrition and recovery and scaling.  I’ve had to work through some set backs and injuries and major life events that have impacted my performance and learn the humility and patience that comes with that.

What fitness goals do you have for the next year? I’d like to pick powerlifting back up and compete in a powerlifting meet in 2023.

How has your fitness influenced and/or impacted your life outside of the gym? As I mentioned, the gym has taught me humility and patience.  Nothing worth having comes easy and only I am in control of the person I am when I walk in the gym.  The same goes for life in general.  I’ve learned (and am still learning) to show up for myself and to not get overly frustrated by failure.
