May 2022 Athlete Of The Month

Name: Clipper Clowes

Age: 61

Occupation: Research Analyst

How long have you been a member at BBS&C? About 10 months.

Were you athletic or involved in sports when growing up? That was a long time ago. But yes, I have always enjoyed both competitive sports as well as conditioning and weightlifting my whole life.

Were you working out regularly prior to joining BBS&C? If so, what were you doing? I was doing CrossFit at Athletic Asylum for a number of years before it closed.

Why do you workout? Let me sum it up this way, it is a quality of life thing for me.  I intend to do old age a little “differently” than other baby boomers. The whole  idea of getting in a bar fight at 90, walking out and riding off on my Harley with my significantly younger girl on the back as opposed to pushing a walker through a nursing home, wondering what’s for lunch sort of thing.

What is your favorite lift or movement and why? I am not sure that there is one favorite lift. I do enjoy the challenge of squats.

What is your favorite workout or type of workout and why? Of all the workouts, I would say the 10-15 minute “grinder” type with 3-4 different exercises involved.

What have you accomplished as an athlete (big or small) during your time at BBS&C?The short answer is getting back to squat snatching. One of the things that BBS&C does better than any other gym is the commitment by the coaches to a complete warm up prior to the start of the days workouts without exception. As an older athlete, this has kept me injury free and I attribute the comprehensive warmup and the coaching to allow me to get back to squat snatching (yes, aka just snatching). I was strictly power snatching before coming here. So working on snatching and seeing improvement is huge .

What fitness goals do you have for the next year? I want (need) to work on my engine and I want to learn to walk on my hands. How many sixty year old’s do you know that can do that?  LOL

How has your fitness influenced and/or impacted your life outside of the gym? I view it as a part of my lifestyle that I do or try to do everyday. It is something that I prioritize .
